Getting Dressed: New Summer Uniform

So I don't have access to my wardrobe today, and have to work with what I've got, and I actually don't want to wear my black dress (gasp), but it's 82 degrees and not even at the hottest point of the day, and all the rest of my clothes are rather formalish, so I just wore the top to my rose ensemble with my black pants.  

Once I got it on, I realized that I will be wearing a lot of this kind of thing this summer - 80's shirt, pants.  That's all.  
Pretty pumped about this.  I normally do the sundress thing, and still will, but I do tend to get a little crabby by summer's end because all I've worn is, well, a black sundress or tube dress.  NOT to dis these - I LOVE MY BLACK SUNDRESS with unparalleled love, but I am a COLORFUL person, and I have this considerable wardrobe of all kinds of things, and this last year I've amassed something like a dozen 80's shirts.  Gotta wear 'em.  Gotta be colorful.  

Also, gotta wear a braid today.  ?!  Mary is hopefully cleaning up the a) dinky color job I did on myself (did not fade well) and b) trimming the longness into a better shape.  I like long hair right now, though.  And dark hair.  So by the day's end, I will have both, still.  But better.

Getting Dressed: Sorta Fancy

It's nice to have other people take pictures of me.  :)

Wore this Saturday.  I bought it at a thrift store without trying it on.  I loved the pattern.  But I naturally kind of am adverse to elastic-waist anything.  It worked out, though, with an elastic BELT and rolled sleeves.  (My standard method of dealing with any dumpy 80's cotton-blend shirt.)  Skirt n' shirt: $6.  Belt: $3.

You've seen this puppy.  I just had to bust it out again, though.  Why?  Because it's SPRING and I'm OUTSIDE. :)  (I wore this yesterday.  Busy weekend.)

Getting Dressed: Because I Have To

I'm killing time.  Hafta be somewhere in a bit, but don't want to get started on anything momentous.  And everything is momentous right now.  I wasn't even going to photograph my clothing today, mainly because I am trying to maintain my focus on my writing, and this means taking a tiny bit of a mental break from, well, my appearance.  (Which is somewhat odd, as a lot of my writing right now has to do with appearance.  Hm.)

I do love my clothes, I do love getting dressed, I do love posting it here for all the world to see.  I'll keep doing it, but a little more intermittently (at least, until the school year starts again).  I'm wanting to post more about other Dirt Chic-y things I do, too.

But anywho. :)  It is chillier out today, so no sundress.  Instead, a pair of black cargo-ish pants that everyone likes to make fun of ($25), my "Prey For Me" Threadless shark t-shirt ($25), a mesh beach top ($3), and a brand-spanking-new pair of black flip-flops to replace my dearly departed $10 pair that I wore for a solid 7 years ($2.50).

Ocular Choices

I'm back from another residency and I'm extra-ready to write.  But first, some tasks.  High on the list: get new glasses.  My prescription is old, and I'm on my broken back-up frames.  However, I am unsure of how to progress. 

I bought another pair of vintage prescription glasses (80 cents, ouch), to add to the three pairs I already have.  What do you think?

Too nerdtastic for life?

I could just go with some basic black frames.  But then I would have to pay for them.  And they wouldn't be 80 cents.  And they would probably be smallish.  (I really like bigger lenses.)

The thing is, while I wear my glasses fairly often, I wear my sunglasses MORE.  So how important is it, really, to have unobtrusive, nondescript glasses?  Is it impractical for them to be nerd-chic or mega 80's and huge?

Eh.  I'm going to Lenscrafters to see how much it will set me back to get lenses and then I'll chew s'more on this PRESSING ISSUE.

Getting Dressed: Just Barely (But Not Like THAT)

The summer staple black dress.  The Summer Uniform.  If you think I must wear something fantastic, something different every day or most days, let the myth be dispelled.  When I have free time/days, when it's warm/hot, I live to get up in the morning, put on this dress, go about my business.  Maybe put on makeup.  Maybe not.

Yep.  Me - no makeup.  I don't normally do my hair, either, but that's nothing new.  I have a zit on my chin, smack dab in the middle; I might resemble a crone.  

But I don't care.  Today is lovely - I am writing, there is good food in store for me, I've had lovely conversations with fellow writers and artists and teachers in the last few days and it's just been very, very nice to have a break from teaching.  

And it's 77 degrees out.  Raaaaaad.

Getting Dressed: Laura Ingalls Wilder

In honor of the lovely Christine being my houseguest and writing accountability, er, buddy (sorry Christine for calling you buddy publicly ;), I am wearing my LIW dress.  As I call it.  Since I wore it when I performed a bit a wrote about LIW.  It was stunning.  I wore pigtails.

Yes, this dress has been on this blog before, but I'm too lazy to track down the link.  Just know these salient facts: 

-This is the only dress of this kind (calico, muted colors) that I wear.
-The tag shows the brand as "Climax", with lips in the background.  Wow.  Heh heh.  As Christine said, "they needed a little touch of The Rocky Horror Picture Show".  So true.  This dress is very 70's.

Dress: $6.  And a million billion thanks to Christine for the choice picture-taking.

Wanting a bit of France, wanting a bit of magic today.

Will settle for showering with my sandalwood soap from The Vermont Country Store, drinking coffee, reading Vanity Fair, and getting dressed.

Getting Dressed: Just Ducky

Stuff with tags.  Always interesting.  Often fun.  I especially like to see how much something cost way back in the day.  It seems odd to me that sometimes the prices of ok-quality things, back in the day, were often not that much cheaper than something of similar quality is, now.  I know there are reasons for this.  But it's Saturday.  So I'm not thinking too deeply.

This dress still had its tags. 

A little bit heavy on the feminine side, so good thing I have my boots with me. :)  (Lookin' a little manic here.)  $10.

But I don't really need to think that deeply.  The people who crafted this garment already did all the heavy thinking for me:

Vintage Prescription Shades - Triple Win

I have one pair of glasses left, and the prescription is old, and they are broke.  My sunglasses are in better shape, and I love them, and will wear them forever.  But.  I wouldn't mind have a few more pairs.

I bought some vintage prescription sunglasses/glasses frames at an antique store in Colorado.  I know that any decent optometrist (is that even the right word?  Ocular specialist?  Ha.) can, uh, refill them in my prescription.  They aren't cheap frames - one pair is Liz Claiborne, another Anne Klein.  However, I only paid $5 for each of them, and they're all in very solid shape.

This pair I think I would just get as straight-up glasses, no shades:

This pair, I'm not sure about.  They would make awesome shades, either gradated like here, or full-on dark, or even as straight-up glasses.  Hm.

Um, definitely sunglasses:

(Apparently, I don't know how to place them correctly on my face).

I now need to a) get a full-time job and b) find a place that will make lenses for cheap(ish).  In the meantime, I'm fine with broken glasses, because it gives me an excuse to wear my shades as much as possible... :)
