I am not a big fan of some kinds of foods, and I think this is because I didn't like the particular way I grew up with it - not the food itself.
Take chili, for instance.
I was making it the other day, because I had everything that I needed for it, so it made sense. I used the "recipe" off the back of a chili seasoning packet, which was as follows:
1 lb. ground beef, browned and drained
1 undrained can of red beans
2 cans of tomato sauce
Seasoning packet
Bring to a boil, lower heat, simmer for 10 minutes.
Didn't sound very appetizing to me. So, I added:
1 more can of red beans
Tablespoon of minced garlic
A lot of onion powder
Some chili powder
A few tablespoons of buffalo sauce
Chopped onion and green pepper (at least 2 cups, altogether)
It took longer to cook, because the veggies were raw.
So that was that. We ate it with cheese, sour cream and broken up tortilla chips (because I don't really do saltines in this manner, and we had no Fritos). I thought that was that, and while it was good to have this right off the stove, all warm and fairly healthy, I wasn't pumped about it as leftovers, and figured my hubby could eat those.
He did. In the form of an extremely tasty chili burrito. (He is very generous and kind and let me have a "bite" - which is always two bites, with me :) It was just the chili in a tortilla with some cheese, heated and wrapped at the bottom so it wouldn't make a huge mess.
It got me to thinkin - what else could I make with leftover chili? Then I REMEMBERED one of my favorite foods (especially from Steak n' Shake) - chili mac. That would entail some sort of cooked pasta, cheese, onion, and chili sauce (if readily available). What else? Well, it would be great on baked potatoes, or on a hot dog (we buy turkey dogs). I've seen a lot of recipes w/chili as a dip, mixed with various cheeses.
Chili, as I have known it, will never be the same. Any other stellar ideas? Because I totally am gonna rock some chili for a lot of the rest of this season!
